Benedictions & Intercessions

Artist Statement-

Informed by a deep curiosity about the nuances of human relationships, and drawing from my background as a photographer and a writer, my multi-disciplinary works explore themes of identity, privilege, and structural inequality through the examination of the double bind of language, which can unite as quickly as divide; build bridges as easily as barriers; and create beauty as readily as bias. I am interested in challenging language-based boundaries, celebrating the imaginative use of language to connect and heal, and inviting dialogue around how we create, record, and understand meaning.

Over eight trips to my hometown, Columbus, Mississippi, I made over a thousand photos. Editing and sequencing the photos led to questions about the way we encounter images—how an increasingly image-based society consumes and processes nearly constant visual messaging. Deciding which images to share and how to share them required reckoning with, not only the problematic qualities of the medium of photography, but also the constraints and challenges of modern communication, and, beyond that, the problems and power of language itself.
