Benedictions & Intercessions
Artist Statement-
Rooted in a deep curiosity about human relationships and shaped by my dual practice as a photographer and writer, my work explores identity, privilege, and structural inequality through the lens of language—its power to connect and divide, to build bridges and barriers, to create beauty and bias.
This ongoing series interrogates the double bind of language and image: how both can illuminate or obscure, heal or harm. I am drawn to the imaginative use of language as a tool for connection and repair, and I invite viewers into a dialogue about how we create, record, and understand meaning—across boundaries, disciplines, and histories.
A central gesture in this work—the tearing of pages from religious texts—serves as a visceral response to the hypocrisy embedded in institutional language. These texts often speak of peace and mercy, yet their use can perpetuate exclusion and bias. This act is not meant to desecrate, but to confront: to make visible the emotional rupture caused when sacred language fails to live up to its promise.
Through this series, I ask: How do we reconcile the beauty of language with its capacity to wound? How can we reimagine language and image as tools for truth-telling, empathy, and transformation?
